The Saxophone
![]() |
The Saxophone is a woodwind instrument, typically made out of brass and has a family of different sizes: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, & Baritone. The two most commonly used saxophones are the Eb Alto & Bb Tenor. The saxophone uses the vibrations of a single cane reed to produce sound. As a player blows onto the reed, located at the mouthpiece, vibrations begin. Similar to the other instruments in the woodwind family, the player changes the pitch of the instrument by opening and closing tone holes. Pitch is also produced by the amount of air pressure being put into the instrument.
The saxophone is much larger instrument than the other instruments in the woodwind family. With this in mind, saxophones are usually known for being a more durable instrument than instruments like the clarinet or flute. |
